Finishing first or second during the regular season has no bearing on what happens in the playoffs. The recent Flagler Ball Hockey playoffs is proof.
The Chiefs finished the regular season as the top team, but lost in the semifinals to the No. 3-seeded Assassins. The second-place 72 B’s were sent home by the fourth-place Scorpions.
With two upsets already in the books, the Assassins and the Scorpions met Thursday, July 26, in the Flagler Ball Hockey championship game.
In the end, the Assassins defeated the Scorpions, 2-0, in a defensive showdown behind stellar goalkeeping from Assassins goalie Ryan Garside. Goals were scored by team captain Shane Ryan and Ben Ferris.
With the title, the Assassins claimed the inaugural Flagler Cup trophy.
Season award winners are as follows:
Ryan Frezza, League MVP
Matt Lafleur, Points Leader
Steve Heroux, Best Defenseman
Jimmy McGovern, Sportsmanship Award
Matt Wentworth, Best Goalie
Juan Casillas, Most Improved Player
Zach Ellis, Rookie of the Season
The next ball hockey season will begin Sept. 6. In the meantime, players interested can participate in free pickup games, which will take place every 7-9 p.m. every Thursday in August, at the Flagler County Hockey Rink, located off State Road 100, in front of Flagler Palm Coast High School.
