More than 100 kids attended the Improve Basketball Camp, which was split into two one-week sessions, put on by coach Gary McDaniel and the Flagler Palm Coast High School basketball program.

“It’s a way of giving back to the community, keeping kids busy over the summer, keeping them off the streets and reintroducing them or introducing them to the game of basketball,” McDaniel said. “We are trying to improve in any way, both as basketball players and as kids.”

The camp, which was open to ages 6-17, also give the high school players a chance to try their hand at coaching.

“It built kind of like a mentorship with them and the other kids,” McDaniel said. “We have some kids here, at FPC, who are doing some pretty good things right now, and we want to help them give back and teach them to give a contribution.”

But above everything else, the camp is about having fun and bringing the community together through a game that they all love.

“(Basketball) has been a blessing to me for a long time,” McDaniel said. “My goal is to share that.”
