The following is an adapted press release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office:

Flagler County Sheriff Donald Fleming has issued a warning to Flagler County homeowners that con artists are operating in the community and, before paying for any services, consumers need to beware.

“We have individuals who approach residents, especially targeting the elderly, who offer to do repairs at prices they claim are below market value,” Fleming said Tuesday in a statement. “In one instance, an elderly gentleman paid a fake repairman more than $10,000 to fix an electrical problem. After he gave him the check, he never saw him again.”

A separate report came from a Palm Coast homeowner who contracted for modifications to a pool.

After writing checks for more than $2,000 and no work being completed, the homeowner contacted the Sheriff’s Office.

These unlicensed contractors may be your neighbors.

Last week, the city of Palm Coast warned residents of unlicensed contractors

“One victim knew the contractor because he is a local resident. We have investigations on-going in all of these fraud reports, but residents need to protect themselves,” Fleming added.

Always ask to see a license issued from the state, county or city. Be sure your contractor is insured and ask for a contract, making sure that contract has all the contact information you will need if you need to do any follow-up.

Fleming said unlicensed contractors may face charges of grand theft, depending on the amount of money scammed from the homeowner.

“If you’re suspicious, call us,” Fleming said. “We are here to answer your questions.”

Anyone with questions should call the Sheriff’s Office at 386-313-4911.

Consumers may also contact the Florida Department of Professional Regulation at 850-487-1395 or visit their website at www.myfloridalicense.com to verify active contractor licenses.
