Hurricane Isaac could lead to strong rip currents along the beaches, which, according to Flagler County Emergency Management Technician Bob Pickering, would happen even before it gets cloudy and rainy. Exercise caution at the beach this week, he said. "If in doubt, don’t go out."
Currently, the storm is off the Florida coast to the south. "The tropical cyclone has to cross a lot of mountains between here and there," Pickering said. "And the Greater Antilles have killed many a tropical cyclone in the past."
From Monday to Wednesday, "we can expect breezy to windy conditions ... with off-and-on rain and some squalls," Pickering said. "Nothing really that severe. However, things can change, depending whether it goes further east or if it’s stronger than they expect. On the other side of the coin, it could be weaker."
Since records began in 1851, Flagler County has been hit by 17 hurricanes, the most recent of which was 2004.
"We are by no means hurricane proof," Pickering said. "They have happened in the past, and they will happen in the future."
