The Matanzas Shores Women's Club recently gave out eight $500 scholarships to graduating seniors from Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools.

The club is a small, nonprofit club of about 50 members, located in the Hammock development of Matanzas Shores.

Members raised money by sponsoring the annual Whale of a Sale garage sale, in which they sold donated items and baked goods.

The group is already accepting donations for the Nov. 17 sale.

There were 49 applicants who wrote an essay about themselves, and why felt that the scholarships should be awarded to them. Of these applicants, the following eight students were selected: Morgan Hackworth, Rebekah Lam, Devaugh Accoo, Ayhan S. Konar, Elizabeth Gilbert, Jessie Johnson, Ashley Pelose and Andrew Read. Members of the scholarship committee were Joanne Coyle, Bonnie Simms, Liz Wolsky, Car Cox, Lynn Gillis and Jerry There.
