Children got on their hard hats Saturday, Dec. 15, ready for construction time. On the morning’s blueprints: gingerbread houses.
Gathering at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum, the kids used 20 different types of candy to craft the coolest edible houses they could dream up.
"This is the 10th year we’re doing this,” instructor Barbara Saunders said. “It has already become a tradition."
And most of the kids, she added, who range from ages 6 to teens, are most interested in the building aspect of the event.
“They come here year after year,” she said, “and they certainly have a lot imagination. ... There are not many opportunities in the school system to do these kind of more elaborate, expensive art activities. … It’s really like going to Santa's workshop.”
And in true Santa fashion, some of the kids planned to give their houses away as gifts.
"I brought my granddaughter Jocelyn here today," Julie Steams said. "Jocelyn's dad's birthday is tomorrow, and she will give the ginger house to her dad as a birthday present. He will love it."
Another mother, Holley Miranda, called the event “awesome."
“The kids are very creative,” she said. “I love my son's gingerbread house — it’s adorable."
