+Flagler Beach water tank dedicated, 25 months later
The almost invisible water tank on Flagler Ave. in Flagler Beach is now visible because of 2 kissing dolphins painted on its white façade.
Located between the city’s fire and police departments, few residents know of the water tank or its locale.
Stan Drescher decided to do something about it. He wrote a poem, “The Flagler Beach Faceless Tank,” and ran a contest. The winners would receive a $100 savings bond.
Participants were students at the Old Kings Elementary School, and the contest was administered by English teacher Rita Jones and art teacher Kathryn Acierno. Entries were given to the Flagler Beach Commissioners who chose the winners.
Madison Cogar won for the best painting and Mekenzie Messamore for poetry. The winners were announced and recognized at a meeting by Mayor Alice Baker. Each winner also received their $100 savings bond.
Ocean Shore Graphics prepared a plaque with the winning poem and dated October 2010. But due to outside road work, repairs and repainting, the commemoration was delayed 25 months.
The idea to decorate the tank was given to Drescher by water company employee Ed Parks. Parks also showed how he could put “FLAGLER BEACH” on the 130’ water tower on South A1A.
Finally, on Nov. 24, the dedication ceremony took place. A celebration was held first at a luncheon for the winners at Blue. Present also was their mom Heather Alexander, grandmother Kathy Havens, sister Alexis, City Manager Bruce Campbell, and Jones. Kathryn Acierno was unable to attend.
Now, when residents or visitors pass the tank, they’ll read about two youngsters, see the dolphins, and witness the date history was made.
