The former Food Lion in Flagler Beach was transformed into a present warehouse for Flagler Beach Rotary’s Project Share, which will serve 1,100 children this year, in Flagler County and Pierson.
In its 13th year, the purpose of Project Share is to help families in need at Christmas.
“It seems like every year there is more and more need,” said Roseanne Stocker, Project Share Chairperson. “Here in Flagler County, through the Flagler Angels program all the charities work together and it’s a very unique situation. Everyone’s resources go further because of that.”
Unlike some organizations that have an age cutoff, Project Share, while serving all ages, focuses on older children. Also, Stocker said that in Pierson, Project Share is the only group that aids that part of North West Volusia County.
“Because of the downturn in the economy because of the fern industry’s problems, the need in Pierson is beyond belief,” Stocker said. “People are so grateful for what we do.”
But being only 30 members strong, Stocker said that this project would not be possible every year without the support from the community.
“There are so many businesses and churches and individuals that make this possible,” she said.
One of those individuals, without having a connection to the group mailed in a $3,000 donation. Another $1,000 donation along with a box of toys and 10 bicycles was given to Project Share by the Grand Haven Home Tour Committee. The committee opened their homes for tours earlier in the month charging an admission fee to be donated to the project.
“We live in such a beautiful, generous county and everyone should know what a wonderful giving community we have,” said Stocker.
