I come from a large family. My dad has nine brothers and sisters, and I have 23 cousins. My grandmother lost my grandfather at 41, so none of the grandchildren ever got to meet our grandfather.
When I was a freshman in college, I took a genealogy class and had to create a family tree. I immediately called my grandmother, and that same afternoon, I had numerous emails from her with information on both sides of her family and my grandfathers.
Years later, after my grandmother had passed away, I met her Aunt Marcie — my great-great aunt. She told me that my grandmother had always said how glad she was that I had learned where I came from and was able to share all of my heritage information with the rest of my family. It’s always important to know where you come from!
