The best advice I ever received was from a sermon I heard at a church I attended in Michigan: “You don’t have to stay a victim.”
The pastor spoke about being in the “victim mentality.”
When bad things happen to us like our daily irritants, or even traumas that change our lives, we have a choice: To work through it, forgive others, forgive ourselves if necessary, remember our purpose and live out our faith. Or, he went on to say,
“We can choose to stay in the dark, dreary emotions of being hurt, angry, wrongfully accused, or victimized in some way.”
We can choose to turn to a professional to help us, find a good friend, talk to God, read His Word and grow. We can give to others, get exercise, love others and remember we are not perfect like others are not perfect. We can face our hurts in life and not deny them, but embrace the future and celebrate life.
I realized that feeling victimized is paralyzing. Everything and everyone looks negative, and it’s an awful way to live. I am not a victim, but someone who has learned to stay out of the dark. The light is so much more fun!
