My grandparents were Palm Coast pioneers Joe and Eleanor East, and I was exceptionally close to my grandpa. He always told me firmly, “Son, live in the light; be afraid of the dark.”
He taught me that being true to universal values of honor, trustworthiness and kind humor were critical in not only how others may view me, but how I should see myself. Further, that not living right was sure to cause injury. Even causing a slight injury to someone was something to be ashamed of.
I saw him live this. I saw his mastery of his own lesson with how kindly and warmly he greeted folks, and he was greatly humbled by the kindness of others. And if I ever needed reinforcement, I get it seeing faces light up with delight when I mention his name. When I grow up, I want to be just like Joe East.
