Two pieces of advice come to mind: one from my dad and one from my mom. Probably neither is original to them, but as a kid, how was I to know?
The first is not strictly advice, but at least once a month as I was growing up, my father would admonish me: “The man who stands for nothing falls for everything.” Not a bad maxim to live by!
My mother was somewhat more pragmatic. She loved to say: “God gave you two ears and one mouth. Listen twice as much as you speak!”
