Replace I have to with I get to.
I was given this advice by Dave Tollet, the head baseball coach at Florida Gulf Coast University.
It’s pretty simple. Everyday, we say “I have to.”
I have to get up early tomorrow. I have to go to work tomorrow. I have to take my girlfriend to dinner.
But when we say I have to, we really are taking every blessing we have for granted. Instead, we need to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. By replacing I have to with I get to, we very simply change our thinking and immediately we start to see the blessings of our everyday lives.
I get to wake up tomorrow and go work. I get to enjoy an afternoon with my parents.
There are millions of people in this world who are begging for a chance to have the job that many of us take for granted. There are people who would love nothing more in life to have one more day with a loved one but will never have the chance again. There are people in this world who are ungrateful for something as simple as clean drinking water. Things we take for granted everyday because we tell ourselves that it is a burden to go to work. We tell ourselves that waking up early to run early morning workouts is a chore.
We can change our attitudes simply by reminding ourselves that every day is a blessing and every part of our lives, even the ones that seem bad, are blessings that we have the opportunity to enjoy.
So, enjoy them! Tell yourself that you get to do things! Be grateful for what you get to do as opposed to being burdened by the things you have to do.
