I’ve been lucky enough to grow up with a best friend who thinks like I do in so many ways, and we often find ourselves dealing with similar issues at the same time. A few years ago, we were both going through a rough patch, and she passed on a token of wisdom to me that she’d received back in high school:

“Never try to go without something you never go a day without thinking about.”

It’s a theory I’ve thought a lot about since then, and it’s evolved to mean a few different things. On one hand, it’s a sound way to uncover your true passions in life, your priorities, what you’re willing to fight for and the people you care about the most. But it has just as much impact when you turn the tables, and it helps me recognize when I spend too much wasted thought and worry on things that shouldn’t matter and I can most definitely go without. It’s been a healthy reality check, and a good way to help the mind remember what the heart wants.
