Whenever I encounter a difficult person, my dad’s voice pops in my head.
“Kill ’em with kindness, Maureen,” he’d say.
There’s so much that goes on in a person’s day-to-day life, and some days are better than others. I often remind myself that, when a person is mad, it’s not because of something you’ve done. There are so many outside forces that impact a person’s mood that can’t be controlled. All you can do, as the receiver, is share some kindness.
Whether they just wanted someone to listen to them, or they were really mad at you, it doesn’t matter. If you’re always kind, they have very little reason to be upset with you. And who knows? You might turn that person’s day around. You also might find some personal satisfaction knowing that you shared a smile with someone who was having a rough time.
