As eighth-grader Bertina Guerrier stood at the podium, she looked out to the audience Wednesday, Feb. 8, and told them that farts were flammable. “Weird,” she continued with a straight face, “but logical.” She told this to listeners at her class’ Toastmasters International Youth Leadership Program celebration.
Guerrier, who claims to be a shy person, was giving a speech on how laughter is important. It was riddled with strange facts and aimed at making her audience laugh.
Guerrier won the class competition, and Jaylene Leto was awarded runner-up for her speech on teen pregnancy.
Other finalists from Vicki Dawson’s class at Buddy Taylor Middle School were Beth Townsend, Taylor Erdman and Nubia Coleman.
“Its great to help (students) get over some of the shyness and anxiety of speaking in public,” said Janice Gussman, Toastmasters sponsor for the class.
Six classes throughout the district recently completed the public speaking program. Six more are planned to finish before the end of the school year.
Other participating schools include Indian Trails Middle School, Phoenix Academy and Flagler Palm Coast High School.
