The Flagler County Free Clinic held an open house Friday, Feb. 10, in appreciation of its volunteers and in hopes of attracting new ones. The event also served as a 90th birthday party for one of the clinic’s founders, Dr. John Canakaris.

Canakaris started the clinic in 2005, in Bunnell, with Dr. Don Alfonso and Faith Coleman.

The clinic has eight exam rooms, including an ophthalmology room and a gynecology room. Doctors there are able to give prescriptions for medical conditions, but the clinic does not carry or give narcotics. Recently, an EKG machine was donated to the clinic, but the center is in need of a doctor who can read the machine.

The need for physicians and volunteers grows each week; the clinic has provided care to more than 6,700 patients since it opened its doors in 2005.

The clinic is open the first and third weekend of every month, except holidays. House of operation are 5-8:30 p.m. Thursdays to the first 20 patients and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays to the first 60 patients. Visit flaglercountyfreeclinic.com.

A fundraiser for Coleman, who has cancer, will be held 5-8 p.m. Feb. 16, at 150 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach.
