"It’s like eating your vegetables first. The best place to have something difficult is behind you."

When I was a teenager, one of my older brothers, Bruce, hired me to work for him in the home-building business. During the summer months, I was with him every day and was exposed to his way of conducting business. He would always begin his day with the most difficult task, whether it was putting bundles of shingles on the roof or confronting a difficult customer.

“It’s like eating your vegetables first,” he would say. “The best place to have something difficult is behind you.”

One other great lesson was to always treat people with respect and honesty. “Remember, the world is round,” he often reminded me. “Everything finds its way back to you.”

The most profound thing, though, came from my father. He said, “Always treat girls with respect and kindness; they are God’s daughters, and one day you will have to make an account to Him on how you treated them.”

I never, in their 56 years of marriage, heard him raise his voice or speak an unkind word to my mother.
