Walking through Tom Gargiulo’s house, it’s easy to see which stencils are his favorite to work with: the boat, the torso, the figure. He has worked with a few of these stencils since the 1980s to create prints in a variety of settings and colors.
Gargiulo, founder of the Gargiulo Art Foundation, worked in many art media before settling into his current specialty, printmaking, in the 1990s.
“When I moved to Florida, there was no market for oil paining,” Gargiulo said.
He said printmaking gives him the chance to be more creative. “A lot of my work involves chance, spontaneity,” he said. “A lot of painters already have a preconceived idea of what they want to do, and they just aim for that. I don’t have any preconceived idea. I have no idea what is going to happen.”
And that’s the beauty of it, he said.
Gargiulo admitted that working this way sometimes means it takes longer to complete a piece than it would if he were painting, but the time can be spread out.
Hollingsworth Gallery Curator J.J. Graham said Gargiulo doesn’t stop working on a piece until it is sold. But even then, Gargiulo said he has gone back to a sold painting to work on it more.
Gargiulo will host a workshop on mixed media and printmaking Friday, Feb. 24, through Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Flagler County Art League.
Cost for the three-day workshop is $95, plus a $10 materials fee. Proceeds benefit the art league and Hollingsworth. Participants will not need to bring any materials. This is a change from the original announcement about the workshop.
The workshop will focus on making print from Styrofoam using water-soluble paints and recycled material. These materials were chosen in part because they will be easily obtained if students would like to continue with this medium in the future.
