The Lady Pirates have a balanced group of starters.
Matanzas Lady Pirates lacrosse finished last season 10-5.
Redistricting by the Florida High School Athletic Association puts Matanzas in District 4, with the same teams as the boys will face (see story on the left).
Coach Bill Hanrahan enters his third season as the Lady Pirates coach.
Only two seniors were lost from last year’s team. This season, Hanrahan wants a more balanced attack on offense.
Juniors Stephanie Giminez and Alex Normandin were the heart and soul of the offense last season for Matanzas.
Giminez scored more than 50 goals and Normandin had 26 goals and 18 assists. This season, Hanrahan wants production out of seniors Alyssa Tirado, Victoria Richards and sophomore Julieann Hanrahan.
“Offensive balance will come with specific plays designed to get certain players the ball more or by putting them in spots where opportunities to score come,” Hanrahan said.
Defensive starters Ashley Manford and Taylor Campo, as well as goalie Stephanie Stuart, are all returning starters and will anchor a defense that Hanrahan said “needs to gain experience.”
Back in November, Manford signed her National Letter of Intent to play college lacrosse at Coastal Carolina University, a Division I school in Conway, S.C.
The defense will improve by working on more one-on-one skills as well as overall defensive team concepts.
“Good team defense is seven players working together,” Hanrahan said.
The core of the team, Hanrahan said, is a good blend of ages.
There are four seniors, four juniors and four sophomores.
