Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools produced a combined seven place finishers Saturday, Jan. 14, at the 26th-annual Flagler County Rotary Invitational.
The competition was steep this year and included several past state champions, including Springstead High School, which was the 2011 Class 2A state champion. Springstead won this year’s Flagler County Rotary, keeping its streak alive: Springstread has won the tournament each year since 2009.
Matanzas High School placed 10th as a team; FPC tied Chiles High School for 12th place.
“This is one of our most complete team finishes,” said Matanzas coach John White. “Every wrestler scored points and several came close to placing.”
The most impressive finish for Matanzas was 182-pounder Jason Cowles’ second-place finish.
“Jason has been working on his shots,” White said. “They started coming together this weekend. We knew Jason was capable of winning it.”
Although Cowles did not win the championship match, White believes he still has a chance to wrestle deep into the postseason.
Zack Ford was the only FPC wrestler who had competed in the Flagler Rotary in the past. He lived up to coach Bobby Bossardet’s expectations of making finals, finishing in third place in the 132-pound class.
Next up, FPC will compete in the 5-Star Conference Championships Jan. 22, in DeLand, and the District 2-5A championships Feb. 5.
Matanzas High School will host the St. Johns River Conference Championships Jan. 30 and travel to the District 5-1A championships Feb. 6.
