The Flagler Palm Coast girls soccer team ended its 2011-2012 season the exact same way it did last year.

The Lady Bulldogs lost to Fletcher, 2-1, Tuesday night in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals. Fletcher knocked FPC out of the state playoffs last season as well.

The Lady Bulldogs ended the season with a 22-4-2 record.

Matanzas soccer falls in districts
The Matanzas Pirates lost to Ponte Vedra, 2-1, Monday night, in the first round of the District 4-3A tournament.

The Pirates, who were the No. 8 seed, traveled to take on No. 2-seeded Ponte Vedra. Matanzas fell behind 1-0 on a corner kick late in the first half.

Then, with 10 minutes remaining in the game, Pirates freshman Nick Weber sent a ball into the box which hit the hand of a Ponte Vedra defender. Eric LaVerne stepped in for the penalty kick. Ponte Vedra’s keeper made the initial save, but LaVerne finished the rebound, evening the score at 1-1.

However, with 25 seconds remaining in the game, a scrum took place near Matanzas’ goal. After a deflected shot, the ball fell to a Ponte Vedra attacker who scored, giving the Sharks a 2-1 win.

Matanzas finished the season 7-7-1, including five one-goal losses.

Matanzas coach Rich Weber said Ponte Vedra easily could be the best team in the district despite not being the top seed.

“Our boys grew up during this match and played like men against a big, strong, physical team,” Weber said. “I am very proud of their effort and commitment. I am heartbroken for them to lose in that fashion.

“However, I know they left it all on the field, which is all you can ask of them.”

Tonight’s games
In girls soccer, the Flagler Palm Coast girls soccer team looks to get back on track in the regional quarterfinals.

The Lady Bulldogs (22-3-2) lost to Spruce Creek, 2-1, Friday night in the District 2-5A championship.

They travel to play Fletcher at 7 p.m. If FPC wins, it will play in the regional semifinals 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at a site to be determined. If Spruce Creek beats Mandarin tonight, then FPC and Spruce Creek would meet again Thursday.

In girls basketball, Flagler Palm Coast hosts Atlantic at 7:30 p.m. A win tonight and then a win during Friday’s in-school game at DeLand would give FPC a 5-Star Conference Championship. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Sandalwood Friday night to move into a tie for first place in the district. A coin flip will take place at 5:30 p.m. to determine who gets the No. 1 seed in next week’s tournament.

In boys basketball, FPC hosts New Smryna Beach at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs (18-2) have four games remaining after tonight, including a Feb. 3 matchup against Matanzas.
