Despite a sizzling start to the season, Flagler Palm Coast lost three of its final four games.
The Flagler Palm Coast girls soccer team ended its season Tuesday night after losing to Fletcher, 2-1, in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals.
FPC took a 1-0 lead in the first half Tuesday night after freshman Christen Barney found the back of the net. But in the second half, Fletcher evened the score on a goal from nearly 40 yards out.
The game remained tied after regulation and through two 10-minute overtime periods, so it went into penalty kicks.
After five spot kicks for each team, the PKs were tied, 3-3. In sudden death, FPC missed the first shot, while Fletcher converted its penalty. Game over. Season over.
The Lady Bulldogs finished 22-4-2, including a 2-1 loss Friday, Jan. 20, in the District 2-5A championship, against Spruce Creek.
This was the second consecutive year that coach Pete Hald’s team lost in the district championship to Spruce Creek and then lost to Fletcher in the regional quarterfinals.
Hald, who just finished his 21st season at FPC, referred to the loss as “very disappointing.” “We didn’t play up to our potential,” Hald said.
The Lady Bulldogs tallied 20 shutouts this season, breaking the previous school record of 15.
Senior goalkeeper Haley Lademann gave up eight goals in 28 games.
“What’s disappointing is we had a tremendous season, but we weren’t playing our best soccer in the end,” Hald said. “Earlier this season, I said it isn’t how you start, but how you finish.”
