The Flagler Palm Coast boys soccer team is headed to the District 2-5A championship Friday, Jan. 27.
Flagler Palm Coast (No. 2 seed) knocked off No. 3-seeded DeLand, 5-0, Wednesday night in the semifinals of the district tournament.
FPC got goals from Umarkhon Ayupov, Max Eisele, Jonathan Kusek, Martin Maschio and Nathan Monsanto. The Bulldogs outshot DeLand, 14-4.
FPC (12-2) will play top-seeded Spruce Creek in the District 2-5A championship 7 p.m. Friday, at the New Smryna Beach Sports Complex. FPC and Spruce Creek split the regular-season series.
Regardless of Friday’s outcome, the Bulldogs will be headed to the state playoffs next week.
FPC basketball improves to 19-2
The Flagler Palm Coast boys basketball team defeated New Smyrna Beach, 76-58, Tuesday night.
FPC (19-2) outscored NSB in the first quarter, 24-9, and never looked back. Guards Tyler Hopkins (27) and Malik Maitland (23) combined for 50 of FPC’s 76 points. Hopkins and Maitland each drained four 3-pointers.
FPC looks for its 20th win of the season Saturday, Jan. 28, at Spruce Creek.
Lady Pirates win ninth game
Matanzas continues to tack on to its school record for in wins in a season.
Tuesday night, the Lady Pirates beat Middleburg, 32-24, to improve to 9-14. Matanzas is on a two-game winning streak.
Samantha Volpe scored 12 points — all on four 3-pointers. Morgan Pearson had six rebounds and six steals.
Matanzas looks to extend its winning streak 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Deltona.
Five Matanzas football players to play in All-Star game
Five Matanzas High School football players were selected to play in the North Florida Shriners All-Star game. The game will take place 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the University of North Florida, in Jacksonville.
The players are Shawn White, Dorian Stanard, Nikko Bembry, Joel Manning and Mark Pugh. They will be playing for the south team.
Shawn White had 127 carries for 871 yards, 12 catches for 156 yards, 6-for-10 passing for 122 yards and scored 15 TDs. Defensively, White had 29 tackles for loss, including seven sacks, 73 total tackles, three caused fumbles and five recovered fumbles. Named Jacksonville QB Club Offensive Player of the Week for Week 3, named to FACA District 5 All-District team and was Player of the Year Runner-Up. White was named to the SJRAC All-Conference team and has been selected to play in the central Florida All-Star game. White is being recruited by Navy, Jacksonville State, Georgia Southern, FAMU, Mars Hill, and Jacksonville University.
Dorian Stanard had 45 catches for 811 yards and five TDs. He weas the No. 1 receiver in the Volusia/Flagler area. He was named to the FACA District 5 All-District team and was SJRAC All-Conference.
Nikko Bembry played offense and defense. Had 11 catches for 226 yards, including a school-record 89-yard TD catch against Creekside. Defensively, he had three interceptions, 33 tackles and one fumble recovery. Bembry was honorable mention FACA District 5 as a defensive back. He is being recruited by Georgia Southern and the Citadel.
Joel Manning was the Lineman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and voted the "Iron Pirate” as the player who has made the biggest gains in the weight room for both his junior and senior years. Manning had 69 tackles as an interior defensive lineman, three sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and 11 hurries.
Mark Pugh had 29 catches for 292 yards and one TD, including a school-record 10 receptions against FPC. He also rushed 31 times for 205 yards and 3 TDs. Pugh was a FACA District 5 honorable mention, and was WNZF Player of the Game against FPC. He is being recruited by Ave Maria, Stetson, Bethune-Cookman University, Methodist, and Webber International.
