It was Pirates domination Saturday, Jan. 28, in the North Florida Shriners All-Star game.
Matanzas High School had four football players compete for the South team. The Pirates were crucial in the South team’s 33-29 comeback win. Matanzas players accounted for four of the five touchdowns on the day.
Joel Manning played defensive tackle in the game, and racked up three tackles.
Dorian Stanard was the leading receiver in the game, hauling in five catches for 82 yards, including a 39-yard reception to set up the South team’s go-ahead touchdown with 34 seconds remaining in the game.
Nikko Bembry played cornerback and did kick-return duties. As a returner, Bembry had four returns for 104 yards. Playing cornerback, he had two tackles, one interception, and a fumble recovery that he returned 19 yards for a touchdown.
Shawn White played offense and defense. Defensively, as a tackle, he had seven tackles and two quarterback pressures. On offense, White carried the ball 13 times for 62 yards and had three touchdowns. White was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player.
Flagler Palm Coast gets No. 1 seed
It came down to a flip of a coin last week, but the Flagler Palm Coast girls basketball team won the toss and will be the No. 1 seed this week in the District 1-8A tournament.
FPC (16-8) will play the winner of the play-in game between Mandarin and Sandalwood. The championship will be 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Mandarin High School.
This is the third time in four years coach Javier Bevacqua will bring the Lady Bulldogs to the state playoffs. The only time Bevacqua missed states was his first season at FPC. Regardless of the outcome in the district championship Saturday, FPC advances into the state playoffs.
Matanzas faces top-seeded Pedro Menendez
The Matanzas High School girls basketball team will place No. 1-seeded Pedro Menendez 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, in the semifinals of the District 4-5A tournament.
The Lady Pirates (10-15) have broken the school record for wins in a single season, which previously was five. This is coach Brian Morris’ first season with Matanzas.
Last week, Matanzas beat Deltona, 51-35, for its third straight win. In the game, the Lady Pirates made 11 3-pointers in the first half, setting a school record.
