Skinny horse report
9:51 a.m. — 690 Block of County Road 140. Animal complaint. The deputy responded to a complaint about skinny horses on the property. There were seven horses on the property, three of which appeared “a little underweight and one horse is very underweight,” according to the deputy’s report.
The owner stated he does not like to keep the horses too fat during the summer because it puts too much stress on the horses. He also stated that money was tight, and he had been rationing the hay to them.
The owner gives eight pounds of feed per day to each horse. He stated that one horse is skinny because it’s 26 years old. He was unsure why another horse wouldn’t gain weight and said he would take it to a veterinarian.
The deputy recommended reducing the number of horses in the herd, give them more hay and give them more shelter to get out of the sun. He said he would check back with the owner in 30 to 45 days.
