The four houses of Hogwarts Schools of Witchcraft and Wizardry competed Saturday, July 7, for the title of Wand Champion.
Bermenly Jeanbaptiste won the tournament for the house of Ravenclaw, beating his competitor, David Nudelman, of Hufflepuff.
The wand tournament was the beginning of a month-long Harry Potter extravaganza featuring movie matinees, a potions class and a birthday party (see www.Palm CoastObserver.com for a schedule).
But the most exciting thing about July for the library is that the Friends of the Flagler County Library were selected by the American Library Association for the loan of an exhibit created by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine.”
The display explored the link between the Potter series and Renaissance traditions of science and medicine.
The library has been on the waiting list for two years to house this display.
“It’s very exciting for us,” said Holly Albanese, library director. “What made it even more exciting is that we got it in July. Most people don’t know that July is the birthday month of Harry Potter, the character.”
In addition to the display, Albanese has collected and personally purchased memorabilia from the literary series to round out the collection.
“I find that Harry Potter appeals to ages 5 to 95. Even though it’s considered a young adult series, it crosses the divide.”
