The Florida Association of Community Action has named the Northeast Florida Community Action Agency, which helps low-income families become financially independent in Flagler and surrounding counties, its 2012 Agency of Year.
The nonprofit has taken home this honor five the past six years.
With programs focusing on job-skill development, literacy, financial education and more, the NFCAA served 2,982 Flagler residents and 998 families in its last fiscal year. According to the United States Census Bureau, Flagler has a current poverty rate of 15.5%.
In its full seven-county region, the agency served a total of 38,000 residents.
“The Agency of the Year award is given to the agency that demonstrates the greatest impact in improving lives and communities through organizational excellence and best practices in the Florida Community Action Network,” said Wilma McKay, executive director of the Florida Association of Community Action. “As winner for five of the last six years, NFCAA continues to be a leader in its commitment to … helping people and changing lives.”
In order to win this award, an agency must change lives and create self-sufficiency in their community, as well as improve the community for low-income citizens through advocacy, partnerships, public service, job-placement assistance and more.
“Having received this award is the utmost compliment to what we strive to do for people in Northeast Florida,” said John Edwards, executive director of NFCAA and chairman of the National Community Action Partnership. “We applaud the individuals who seek out our help and apply their fervent desire and hard work to positively improve their lives.”
