A group of Palm Coast residents gathered Saturday, July 21, to celebrate their Colombian heritage and Colombia's Independence Day, which is traditionally celebrated on the 20th.
Colombian nationals have been celebrating their independence from Spain for 202 years. On July 20, 1810, Colombian patriots stirred the population of Bogotá into street protests against Spanish rule. The viceroy, under pressure, was forced to agree to allow for a limited independence which later became permanent.
“Most of us do not have family here,” said Yolanda Herrera, one of the celebration attendees. “We are double nationality, American and Colombian; but the blood calls you. We need our culture — the food and the happiness of everyone being together. This is not home, but celebrating makes it feel like home.”
Herrera said she hopes to one day have a Colombian club in Palm Coast.
