Flagler Palm Coast High School alumna Bernice K. Lopez was selected from a competitive pool of applicants to be part of the 2012 Hispanic-Serving Health Profession Schools Summer Traineeship Program.

For 10 weeks this summer, Lopez has been researching issues on HIV/AIDS along the Mexican border. Her time was split between the University of California at San Diego Department of Global Health and a student-run clinic, Health Frontiers in Tijuna.

Lopez earned her master’s of public health from the University of South Florida and is currently a Ph.D. student in applied anthropology.

Lopez is hoping this summer experience will lay the foundation for her future doctoral research in HIV/AIDS and address issues regarding access to care among vulnerable populations.
