Head out the Flagler County Fairgrounds any week night during the summer and the sounds of the balls cranking off the aluminum and woods bats and fans cheering is a common sound.

That’s because the Flagler County Coed Softball League is in full swing.

George Fortuna, league director, has been at the helm for the last three seasons. The league has continued to grow over that time. In 2010, there were 28 teams. That jumped to 31 last summer and there are 32 teams this summer.

The league is split up with play on Mondays/Wednesdays and then two leagues on Tuesdays/Thursdays.
“(The leagues) are getting more competitive with the increased participation of more athletic women players,” said Fortuna, who also runs a 43-team league in Maryland.

Fortuna sits on the Flagler County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board as a volunteer.

He said husband and wife combinations have formed more teams over the years, which helped create a family atmosphere at the ball fields. Coed tournaments used as fundraisers also have generated more interest. Fortuna said there have been five coed tournaments so far with another two on the already scheduled.

“It's great to see how the coed softball program has helped to support people of the community who are in need of financial help, such as cancer treatments and youth sponsorship,” Fortuna said. “Flagler County has stepped up on all occasions to provide a facility for all to use.”
