In May, Women’s Initiative of Flagler County teamed up with Publix, Eagle Nest Storage, Intracoastal Bank and Palm Harbor Golf Club for the 2012 Spring Chicks with Can’s Food Drive.

The award winning volunteer team from Chicks with Cans started its spring food drive to help local food banks meet their rising needs during the summer months. In Flagler County, nearly 70% of schoolchildren are on the free or reduced lunch program. During the summer months, with no school in session, local food banks have a greater challenge to meet the rising needs.

During two weekends in May, more than 50 volunteers from Chicks with Cans set up donation stations in front of Flagler Publix stores seeking non-perishable food items for Flagler county food pantries. On Saturday, May 19 Chicks with Cans delivered more than 5,500 pounds of food to Flagler Resource Center, Grace Community Food Pantry, St Vincent de Paul and the Family Life Center.

“It is so exciting and inspiring to be associated with such an amazing group of women who take action, step-up, get involved and make a true difference in our community. I also am very grateful for the overwhelming generosity of our community members in their giving,” said UW/WIF Board Chairwoman Donna Murray, of Murray & Murray Insurance.

The mission of the United Way Women’s Initiative of Flagler County is to “create positive, measurable, long-term change in the lives of women and children of Flagler County by focusing on root causes and pulling resources to increase our impact.”
