Mentors, mentees and community supporters gathered Monday, June 4, to recognize achievements at the fifth-annual African-American Mentor Program Recognition and Award Celebration, held at Indian Trails Middle School.

This year, the program, which has 75 student participants, celebrated the fourth group of graduates.

Keynote speaker Allen Harrell challenged mentees with three questions, “Do you know who you are? Do you know what you’re about? And do you know what you’re feeding yourself, not through just your mouth but through your eyes, through your ears and through the senses of your mind?”

John Winston, chairman of the Executive Committee, recognized seven adults for their commitment to the program. Jim Guines was presented the Founders Award for his involvement in getting the program started, and Merrill Climo was presented the Co-founders Award for his participation early in the program.

Walter Sarden was recognized with the Spark Plug Award, and fellow Executive Committee members Trahan and Herve Rattray were given President’s Awards.

Sabrina Crosby also was recognized for her dedicated service to the group, and Ralph Lightfoot was given a Certificate of Superior Achievement for his role in creating the group’s website.

Winston said: “This is God’s work; we do it not for accolades, not for awards — we do it because it must be done.”
