A soccer pioneer

In Poland and Ukraine, the Union of European Football Associations EURO is taking place — a 16-nation cup that comes around every four years. (It happens on the off-years of World Cup.)

The tournament will run through July 1.

So it’s fitting that next weekend, an iconic figure in developing soccer in Flagler County, will be honored.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, June 23, soccer field No. 1, at Indian Trails Sports Complex, will be dedicated to the memory of Eddie Herrera, who died in August 2008, at the age of 69, from a cerebral hemorrhage.

Herrera was a soccer pioneer for Flagler County when he brought his professional talent from Colombia in 1977.

That same year, he led his youth team to a Florida State Youth Soccer Association championship, following an undefeated season.

His son, Eddie Herrera Jr., was on that team.

“Basically, he’s the founding father of soccer in Flagler County, and we’re extremely honored that they are able to dedicate a field in his name,” Herrera Jr. said.

Herrera Jr. said his father simply wanted to spread the love he had for soccer.

“He just wanted to be known for conveying his love for the game to anyone who would be willing to listen, and I know many players who he coached would testify that his heart and passion was for the game of soccer,” Herrera Jr. said.

Herrera now coaches his 12-year-old daughter in town.

The Herrera soccer legacy will continue to live on.

Matanzas softball gets $1,900 from Flagler dealership
Flagler Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram donated $1,900 to the Matanzas High School Softball Booster Club last month.

The money was raised in April when Matanzas hosted the District 4-5A tournament. Dodge agreed to donate $20 for each test drive of one of the four cars on-site at the tournament.

“The Dodge Booster Club is a great program,” said Mindy Miller, owner of the dealership. “We’re very pleased to support our local schools and community.”

Also last month, Matanzas won a $15,000 grant for new uniforms and equipment from Allen Sportswear.
