Joe Racke, brigadier general of the 35th signal group, Fort Bragg, N.C., provided me the best business advice I have ever received. He encourage to me to always surround myself with people smarter than I, regardless of the position that I held. At the time, his comments seemed simple enough but as a young captain, little did I understand the wisdom in this statement. As I advanced in my profession, I came to understand that ‘smart’ also meant with different views. Throughout my career at Unilever and Bath & Body Works, I sought people who understood that individual success was achieved only when those working for you achieved their measure of success. Racke’s words are profound if we are willing to challenge conventional wisdom and understand the value each person brings to an organization.
