Early on in life, it was drilled into me that the young shall lead the way. But no one told me 9- and 12-year-old golfers from Palm Coast would be the ones waving the leadership flags.
After what Beatrice Deitz and Matthew Bayer did in Pelican Bay and Grand Reserve, respectively, I’m now a believer.
Deitz, 9, daughter of Jack and Amanda Deitz, shocked a portion of the golf world with a stunning first-place finish at the Volusia Junior Championship, scoring a round of 34. She then advanced to Pelican Bay South, and scored another 34 en route to a second-place finish.
Eric Gonzales, teaching pro at Grand Club’s Cypress Knoll, told me many months ago of the progress and possibilities shown by Deitz in one of his many classes.
Mathew Bayer, 12, shocked bystanders with a 42 on the front nine and then an eye-popping 37 on the back. Bayer has taken just 10 lessons with Kathy Murray to accomplish something many of us “experienced” golfers can only hope for.
Indeed, the young shall lead the way and there is likely much more to come.
Kids golf for free
The Grand Club’s Pine Lakes and Cypress Knoll courses are also diving into the fray with free golf for children until Aug. 1.
The offer states children under the age of 15 play free after 11 a.m. when accompanied by a paying adult. But one way or another, it’s a great opportunity to rise in this fascinating game of golf at two popular courses.
Tee times can be booked by calling Pine Lakes at 445-0852 or Cypress Knoll at 437-5807. Make sure to mention the deal when booking the tee time.
Fourth of July
This traditional holiday takes on a rousing all-out-fun time at the Pine Lakes Golf Course with its Weekend Shotgun on July 7, starting at 8:30 a.m.
The $30 fee includes a round of golf, hotdog and fountain drink after the round. The event is featuring gross and net divisions. Call the Pro Shop at 445-0852 for more information.
