+ Local fighters to represent Team USA in October
Three fighters from Palm Coast’s Remix Martial Arts Studio qualified earlier this month to compete for Team USA later this year.
Mathias Daza, Paul Schettino and Anthony Schettino each competed at 2012 World Martial Arts Council Regional Championship June 8 and June 9, in Dearborn, Mich.
Daza, a purple belt, finished with a bronze medal in musical extreme weapons. “I’m completely blown away by the way Mathias immerses himself in his performance,” said his mother, Jean. “He strives to reach a higher level of achievement with each routine.”
Paul and Anthony Schettino, both brown belts, each won silver medals in their respective divisions in sparring.
Remix Martial Arts is run by five-time World Martial Arts champion Kevin Williams.
“Kevin has been an outstanding instructor and a great role model for these kids,” Virginia Schettino said. “He’s very blessed, passionate about what he does for these kids and takes great pride to help change the lives of the next generation of today’s youth.”
Next up, the three will represent Team USA and compete in the 2012 WKC World Championships in October, in Montreal, against Team Canada.
“I’m extremely proud of the team and, with discipline, motivation and determination to train hard this summer, they will continue to stay focused while striving to be the best,” Williams said.

+ Matanzas grad receives $8,000 USTA grant
Rebekah Lam, a 2012 graduate of Matanzas High School, recently received a $8,000 grant from USTA Serves, the national charitable foundation of the U.S. Tennis Association.
Lam was a member of the Lady Pirates varsity tennis team last season. She will be attending college at the University of North Florida, where she hopes to become a walk-on member of the Lady Ospreys tennis team.
Each year, USTA Serves awards scholarships to deserving youth who have participated in USTA and other organized youth tennis programs, have demonstrated high academic achievement and require financial assistance for college matriculation.
Lam received the grant because she “excelled academically, demonstrated community service and participated in an organized tennis program,” according to the USTA.
