+ FPC soccer receives sportsmanship award
Flagler Palm Coast High School boys soccer was the recipient of the 2011-2012 Team Sportsmanship award from the East Coast Florida Referees Association.
The award was delivered to the team Feb. 27, at the end-of-season banquet.
The Bulldogs finished 12-4, but were recognized more for their “good behavior” on the field, before, during and after games.
Jim James, president of the association, said the team responded with “class” when faced with adversity after fouls and questionable calls.
“This is a great honor to be proud of,” FPC coach Noah Braun said. “I give a lot of credit to the boys.”
+ Knuckleheads win Flagler Ball Hockey title
The Knuckleheads won the Ball Hockey League championship, defeating the Scorpions, 5-3, and avenging last season’s championship loss.
The Knuckleheads jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Scorpions crawled back, getting the score to 3-2, thanks to the work of Matt Lafleur, who scored a goal and an assist.
But the Knuckleheads answered from there, getting a goal back and going into the third period with a 4-2 lead.
Eric Leduc led the Knuckleheads with three points halfway through the third period (2 goals, 1 assist).
Jimmy McGovern, of the Scorpions, got his team within a goal again, but it wasn’t meant to be for the Scorpions this season. Leduc netted a goal late in the game to seal the win for the Knuckleheads. Leduc was named the Most Valuable Player in the playoffs with a four-point performance. John “Stonewall” Duval again played well for an honorable mention.
