The powers that be have instructed me to inform readers that I was named the Journalist of the Year for weekly newspapers by the Local Media Association, a group of more than 2,000 newspapers in North America.
After learning about the award, I’ve received many congratulations, including a box of Good & Plenty from my wife, Hailey, and a dead-fish handshake from my 8-year-old son, Jackson.
I was beaming when I first heard the news via a phone call March 8, at Jackson’s flag football practice. On the drive home, in one of those moments of gratitude I said, “You know, Jackson, I’m glad I get to be your dad.”
He replied, without taking a breath for the punctuation: “I know. Can you turn it to track six for ‘Ring of Fire’?” He’s becoming quite the Johnny Cash fan.
Flagler County Attorney Al Hadeed was nice enough to send me an email, saying this: “To the degree individuals or institutions are recognized outside of Flagler for the merit of their local work or activity, I believe that helps us in projecting a picture of competence and quality, and helps in economic development.”
It’s certainly a career highlight. Thanks for reading the Palm Coast Observer.
