Palm Coast Roller Derby opened its season Sunday, March 12, against the Lakeland Derby Dames, in Lakeland.

Although coach Tom “Geronimo Jackson” Iacuzio said it was a great bout, Palm Coast fell short, losing 157-122. Next, the team will face the Sintral Florida Derby Demons at Skate City, in Daytona Beach, before an April 15 rematch with Lakeland, in the Palm Coast home opener, at Skate and Shake, in Ormond Beach.

This contact sport consists of a series of short matchups (jams) in which both teams designate a scoring player (the jammer) who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer —in effect playing both offense and defense simultaneously.

The team practices 6-8 p.m. every Monday and Friday, at the Flagler County Youth Center hockey rink, 5500 State Road 100, and is always looking for fresh meat.
