Flagler Palm Coast scored seven goals in the first quarter Friday against Matanzas.
Flagler Palm Coast scored within the first minute of play March 9 and proceeded to score another six goals in the first quarter as the Bulldogs defeated crosstown Matanzas, 18-4, in a District 6 matchup.
FPC led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter. Matanzas was able to slow down the Bulldogs’ attack in the second quarter, limiting FPC to just three goals. The Bulldogs led at halftime, 10-2.
The second half was more of the same as FPC continued to outscore Matanzas. The Pirates were limited to one goal per period.
FPC had a balanced offensive attack Friday night. Seven players each added a goal. But the three main attackmen for FPC led the way. Wes Adams had three goals and four assists; Shane Noble had six goals and one assist; and Cheyne Devens had three goals and five assists. FPC goalie Conor Bertha had nine saves.
Additionally, FPC’s Ryan King was extremely successful on face-offs, winning the clamp most of the time, going 12-for-22, and helping the Bulldogs get into their offensive sets.
FPC coach Ryan Andrews said his team is playing “fantastic” right now.
“(The players) all seem to be connecting on some level,” he said. “If one player is having a bad game, then the others pick up the slack.”
For Matanzas, it’s about finding the right combination, said first-year coach Mike Jones. “We’re still working a few things out from a personnel standpoint,” he said. “Once we find the right combination, I think we will click a little better and be able to patch up our problems.”
Jones hopes tough competition through the early part of the season will pay off for his team later on.
FPC improved to 4-2, 2-0 in district play. Matanzas fell to 2-4, and 1-1 in the district.
