+ Lady Bulldogs secure top seed, playoff berth
Flagler Palm Coast softball scored two runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 5-3 win Friday over District 1-8A rival Mandarin.
With the win, FPC improved to 11-1 and locked up the No. 1 seed in the district. Because there are only three teams in the district, FPC gets a spot in the district championship game, which will take place next month. The Lady Bulldogs automatically earned a state playoff berth.
Sophomore Morgan Lambert (11-1) continued her dominance. FPC got six of its nine hits from Sam Mittel (3-for-4) and Tori Giaccone (3-for-3). Destiny Kelly went 1-for-2.
Mandarin, who handed the Lady Bulldogs their only loss earlier this season, rallied in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within one run. But in the bottom of the fifth, junior Tori Giaccone blasted a solo homer — the first out-of-the-park home run in her high school career — to cushion the Lady Bulldogs’ lead by two runs. FPC was able to shutdown the Lady Mustangs in the final two innings, securing the victory.
+ Drumm to run at the University of West Florida
After several months of thought, Matanzas running star David Drumm signed his National Letter of Intent March 9 and accepted a cross country scholarship to the University of West Florida, in Pensacola.
UWF is a member of the Gulf South Conference in NCAA Division II.
Last year, West Florida qualified for the NCAA Division II Cross Country regionals and finished fourth out of 12 teams.
Drumm leaves Matanzas as a four-time state qualifier. Last year, he was the district champion and a regional champion in 2010. Drumm holds the Matanzas 5K record with a time of 15 minutes, 56 seconds.
“David has meant so much to our program,” said Matanzas cross country coach James Wolfe. “It’s hard to imagine him not being here next year. David has helped establish the level of excellence we now expect from our runners with his work ethic and consistency.”

The award is O’Dell’s first of his collegiate career. Two weeks after taking the gold in the 400 meters at the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships and setting a new Atlantic Sun Indoor meet record, O’Dell won the 400 meters in a personal best indoor time of 48.13 seconds. The mark also extended O’Dell’s No. 1 ranking in the conference in the event.
