A small group of Flagler County dancers stood in a circle Friday, March 23, each taking turns creating a rhythm with their feet. They were participating in the master’s tap dancing class taught by Galen Higgins, dance member of Rhythmic Circus, a group performing at the Flagler Auditorium that night.
A long way from their Minnesota home, the group is pushing to reach out to more people and have a larger impact with its music, dancing and message.
“We are only one person big and we want to reach out,” said Rhythmic Circus Artistic Director and dancer Ricci Milan. “It’s not impacting the most people, it’s having the biggest impact.”
More than performing, Milan said the purpose behind the touring group is to share their creative fire and ignite that flame all over the country.
“We have this fire, and we’re young enough to really reach people, really hit people in the face with it,” said Milan. “It’s really important to share that with young people.”
In addition to the dance class, Aaron “Heatbox” Heaton, vocal percussionist and singer, taught a beat-box class to more than 20 vocal students earlier that afternoon.
“We play instruments, dance and beat-box. There’s a lot of freedom and artistry that goes into that, but also a lot of skill,” Milan said. “The classes are built to teach skills — some tools that you can use and start to experiment (with) and create your song.”
