Why do I like the Trinity Challenge as a special golf event? Because it’s like the Arnold Palmer Tournament: Every last dime goes to those in need.
Trinity Presbyterian Church is the leader for this May 26 event at the Pine Course — an 18-hole scramble format with an 8:30 a.m. start.
When the idea first emerged, Henry Angle, Joyce Chmel and yours truly couldn’t wait to jump in and find ways to welcome more than 100 golfers to help the needy.
Like Palmer — a wonderful man who gives so much of himself — we and Trinity leaders shook down the rafters for the opportunity to send needed funds to the Duval Home, which serves the mentally challenged; The Family Life Center; Flagler County Human Services; and a local food bank. The food will be canned goods donated by players.
The Grand Club, led by Craig Ranciato, has been generous by allowing the use of Pine Lakes at an affordable price. Coincidentally, Pine Lakes was redesigned by Palmer and staff.
The price is $70 and includes lunch. This is a small amount when considering the good it does. Unlike some tournaments held in the area, we know that all profits are for local needs and we know exactly where the funds will go.
Checks will be accepted until May 1 and may be dropped off to Dora Garcia, at the Grand Club office. Also, you can mail checks to the following address: The Grand Club-Trinity Challenge, P.O. Box 353910, Palm Coast, Fla., 32135. Entry payment for the remainder of May will be cash or credit card.
Bill Nelson
The first time you meet Bill Nelson shuffling golf bags at the Pine Course, you are impressed. You might think, Cart guys can’t be this nice, can they?
Then play golf with him in a foursome with Jim Simes and Dick Ackerman, as did I, and you’ll think again: No way can this nice guy be good at golf.
The final straw flew into the coop when I heard raves about him for his orchestral talents in a Pine Lakes appearance.
Now you can go see for yourself at pub night, which will be April 6, at the Pine Lakes dining area.
He’s a favorite. I know it, and now you can know it, too.
