In Flagler Palm Coast’s fifth state playoff appearance Thursday night, the Bulldogs baseball team lost to Spruce Creek, 1-0, in the Class 8A regional quarterfinals.

“Even though we ended up with a losing record, it doesn’t define this team,” said FPC coach Steve Poppe. “We played a lot of one-run ball games. We played a tough schedule for this reason — to get to this point. Now we’ve got a little taste of it, and it’s expected.”

Spruce Creek (25-4) took the lead early, scoring the only run of the game in the first inning.

Dakota Wehde pitched for the Bulldogs (13-14), allowing seven hits, one walk and striking out two of 26 batters faced.

Spruce Creek pitcher Kyle Marsh threw a no-hitter against the Bulldogs.

“(He’s) a top quality arm,” Poppe said. “We prepared for it. We were just struggling picking the ball up out of his hand. But we put balls in play — they didn’t roll over and die for him, they earned it.”

FPC will lose eight seniors from this year’s team, but Poppe said the foundation has been laid for the program’s future.

Poppe expects his team to return to the state playoffs next season.
