The city of Palm Coast's annual Arbor Day Celebration will kick off 8 a.m. Saturday, May 5, with 5K Root Run/Walk in Central Park. The race is the sixth in Palm Coast’s new 2011-12 Race Series of nine races, with men and women competing for prizes in overall male, female and age category levels.

There will also be a One Mile Flutter Fun Run/Walk for families at 8:45 a.m. Registration beings at 6:30 a.m.

The main event, “Feed a Mouth, Get a Tree, Grow A Community,” opens at 9 a.m. with a free three-gallon tree giveaway exchanged for donated canned goods from residents.

The event continues until 2 p.m. with green vendors, music, refreshments and kids activities. There will be a native butterfly at 11 a.m.

New booths this year include the Flagler County School Learn and Serve Science Fair and Rymfire School’s flower/pollination activity. Admission to the Arbor Day event is free.

 

Other events this weekend are:

First Friday — 6-9 p.m. at Veterans Park in Flagler Beach. The U.S. Navy Band “PRIDE” will perform and activities will include free bicycle helmet giveaways, a bicycle safety rodeo, a fitness course, ‘Foods of the World’ food tasting and the Big Red Bus blood drive. FPCHS Dance Show — 7 p.m. at the Flagler Auditorium, 5500 E. State Road 100. Tickets are $6. The Flagler Palm Coast High School Dance Department is presenting their works in contemporary, bollywood, hip hop, jazz, African, pop, tap and more.
 

Children’s Art Program — 9-11 a.m. at the Flagler County Public Library, 2500 Palm Coast Parkway N.W. Linda Solomon from the Hollingsworth Gallery will present “Communicating through the Arts.” Children will learn about art as it is influenced by music, poetry and movement. Materials are provided. Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser — Noon to 4 p.m. at Steel Rail Industrial Park in Bunnell. Cost is $15.00 per person for Mexican food and beverages. Proceeds benefit the building of the new Flagler cat spay/neuter clinic. Call 503-4250.
 

Derby Day — 3 p.m. at the VFW, 47 Old Kings Road. Hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary. There will be horse races, prizes for the fanciest hats, and drinks. Kentucky Burgoo will be served for $5. Call 446-8696.
 

‘Strike Out’ Poverty Housing — 4-7 p.m. at Coquina Lanes, 11 Old Kings Road N. Hosted by the Flagler Palm Coast High School Chapter and Flagler Habitat for Humanity. All funds raised will go to the building of the Nguyen home.
 

Invitational Golf Tournament — 12:15 p.m. at the Ocean Course at Hammock Beach, 200 Ocean Crest Drive. Registration begins at 12:15 with a 1:00 p.m. shot gun start. There will be a reception and prizes. All proceeds Benefit Special Olympics Florida Flagler County. Call 646-591-6048 or email [email protected].
