Around 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office was called to an L-section home in response to a potentially diseased raccoon.

Upon arrival at the home, the deputy noticed the raccoon had “white discharge” coming from its eyes and mouth, according to the report.

The deputy called dispatch to notify Animal Control and have the animal tested for rabies, but later found out that Animal Control no longer picks up and tests potentially sick raccoons.

“With permission from the shift supervisor, I made the decision to put the sick raccoon down,” the deputy wrote in the report.

The deputy then used the agency-issued Glock 22 handgun and fired two shots from about 15 yards away, striking the raccoon in the chest. However, the animal still tried to get up.

The deputy then fired one shot from five yards away, striking the raccoon in the head.

The resident of the nearby home said the deputy could discard the raccoon in the woods behind the home.
