A week and a half before her show was set to open, documentary photographer Jennifer Kaczmarek stood in an empty gallery soaking a roller in dark gray paint. She meticulously rolled the new wall, coloring over the pale yellow.
“I want people to be inspired,” she said as she looked around the room at the 18 30-by-40-inch framed digital prints leaning against the already painted walls.
The opening night for Kaczmarek’s photographic project “Love for Alyssa” will be 6-9 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Hollingsworth Gallery, 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite 209B.
Kaczmarek’s project focuses on 8-year-old Alyssa Hagstrom, who was born with arthrogryposis, a condition that has left her with no use of her legs and arms and limited use of her fingers.
The photographic diary acts as an anchor for the organization Love for Alyssa, aimed to raise money to pay for equipment and long-term personal care for Alyssa, daughter of Duane Hagstrom.
“You pass someone on the street and everybody goes about their lives,” Kaczmarek said, “but you never take a moment to step inside their shoes and see what life is like for them. And that is really what this organization is all about.”
Even though the show is a fundraiser, the opening is free to attend. Each photograph has been sponsored by a business or individual, and all proceeds benefit Love for Alyssa Inc.
“It’s a way this gallery can give back,” said Curator J.J. Graham. “I think it’s great that she’s using her art work for a different reason — it’s not just decorative. Kaczmarek’s photographs are both heartwarming and heartbreaking. They are beautiful and tender and reflect Kaczmarek’s love for Alyssa.”
