Approximately 65 workers were laid off last week at the Flagler County-based Sea Ray Boats Inc. facility, a spokesman confirmed Monday.
“We did have a reduction in force ... at our Palm Coast manufacturing facility last week,” said Dan Kubera, director of media relations and corporate communications for the Brunswick Corp.
Approximately 65 positions were affected of a total employee population of about 420. According to Kubera, the employees were informed earlier in the week.
In September 2010, Sea Ray laid off about 100 employees, citing a “sluggish economy” and the downward trend of retail boat sales. At the time, Kubera said about 75 of the 100 were temporary employees.
Kubera said in late 2010, the Palm Coast facility had about 370 total positions after the September layoffs.
Sea Ray boats is underneath the Brunswick Boat Group, which is a division of the Brunswick Corp.
The most recent layoffs were a result of the boating industry, Kubera said.
“This action is part of the normal ebb-and-flow of the boating industry as we are continually adjusting our production to better match demand in various industry segments,” he said. “The boating industry, as a whole, remains stable with smaller boat demand running ahead of that for larger boats.”
Asked if the most recent layoffs would be filled eventually, Kubera said: “We also cannot speculate about future actions concerning the workforce.”
