The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8696, or VFW in Palm Coast, will host a Memorial Day picnic 11 a.m. Monday, May 28, with all proceeds to benefit local veterans and their families.

“We have over a thousand members,” Patrick Donnelly, post quartermaster, said. “The (picnic) funds will go into a general fund, where we divvy it up for a variety of projects.”

Some projects to which the post contributes are the Wounded Warrior Program, as well recognition dinners and service to regional veteran’s homes.

Donnelly is especially proud of the post’s relief fund, though, which was the sole beneficiary of the group’s April poppy drive. More than $2,500 was raised in the drive, the funds of which benefit struggling veterans and their families.

“We pay light bills for them. We pay water bills for them. We help them get established,” Donnelly said.

Entry into the Memorial Day service and picnic are $11 at the door and $10 ahead of time.

The VFW is located at 47 Old Kings Road. For more, call 446-8696.
